How Do Our Kidneys Work?

The kidneys are made up of thousands of nephrons, the functional units responsible for filtering the blood. In nephrons, large particles such as glucose, amino acids, and lipids cannot usually pass through the filtration membrane and remain in the bloodstream. When we detect their presence in the urine, these nutrients, therefore, indicate a kidney problem (diabetes, renal failure, etc.).

Other toxic particles are excreted: urea, uric acid. They will be found, diluted in water to form the primitive urine. This urine will undergo different transformations during its passage in the various tubes which constitute the nephrons, in particular a series of secretions/reabsorptions (of water and ions in particular), until obtaining the final urine, which concentrates then into the bladder before being evacuated during the urination reflex.

Why Should You Take Care Of Your Kidneys?

The kidneys function continuously throughout life. Besides their role in purifying waste, they also manufacture hormones (EPO ..) and play a role in calcium metabolism (formation of physiologically active vitamin D ). Together with the lungs, they ensure the acid-base balance of the body by modulating variations in blood pH. Finally, they regulate blood pressure by producing renin, a key enzyme involved in vasoconstriction.

How To Take Care Of Your Kidneys?

The kidneys are sensitive in particular to high blood pressure, which affects the renal arterioles (small arteries), notably disrupting filtration. Maintaining healthy blood pressure is, therefore, very important to keep the kidneys healthy for as long as possible. You must, therefore, ensure that you hydrate properly and limit your soda intake.

A diversified and balanced diet indirectly contributes to reducing cardiovascular risks. Indeed, obesity, diabetes, dyslipidemia (hypertriglyceridemia, hypercholesterolemia) are all factors that tire the kidneys and can lead to chronic insufficiency, which requires bulky and expensive treatments to compensate for this deficiency ( dialysis, transplant ).

Plants That Promote Elimination

Certain plants have a direct action on the kidneys, stimulating the elimination function. This is the case of

  • cherry tail
  • of the meadowsweet
  • birch
  • orthosiphon
  • dandelion (which comes from “piss in bed” – no drawing is done), which has a notorious diuretic action. Herbal medications like Chinese herbal ” hua Laksiam “ (ฮั้วลักเซียม ,which is the term in Thai) is also beneficial.
